AHEM! I have an incredibly serious announcement to make. <drumroll please>

I want to be your next American Idol

I’ve wanted to try out for this show for so long, but either the 9-5 job or a lack of travel funds got in the way. ย Last year, I went so far as to try out for the American Idol Experience at Disneyworld. (Ok ok… it took A LOT of persuasion by Dave. I think he had to talk me into it for 30 minutes.).

But now that I set my own hours, I’m going to give it my best shot!! (Thank you, Pat Benatar). I’m going to the East Rutherford, NJ audition on Aug. 3, and I’ll definitely be live tweeting the whole thing from @amylizmartin.

How can you help:

  1. Cheer me on!
  2. If you know anyone in East Rutherford, NJ that could put me up for the night before the audition, I would greatly appreciate it.
  3. Help me pick a song! What would you suggest I sing? Leave comments by Friday and I’ll put up a poll next week.

WOOHOO!!! Congrats! I tried out in 2006 in LA. Rock it lady!

I wish I had heard you sing, it’s hard to pick a song if I don’t know what you sound like. Come to karaoke tonight at Tommy Joe’s so we can hear you and so you can practice!!

Good for you! Sounds like fun! What’s your style…that would definitely color what song choice you make, I think.

Two things: 1. I just discovered your blog. I am clearly not very quick on the uptake here. 2. I didn’t know you sang! This is very exciting!! I have no useful contributions as to a song idea, but I think it depends on what you like and what your comfortable with singing….
Wishing you the best of luck!!

Good points, Melanie and Christina. I’m most comfortable with 80s rocker-chic kind of songs (I sang “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” at AI Experience). But, I’m also more of an indie rock (Mat Kearney, Alanis Morrisette) and can pull of more soulful songs that you can just belt out (“And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls).

Yeah… that doesn’t narrow down the choices at all, does it?

One Sweet Love – Sara Bareilles

You could play the guitar along with it. Or I could come along and play the piano for you.

    Totally up to you. ๐Ÿ™‚

If only I really was coming to DC for the 4th, we could get some tips from Archie. He was so excited by the idea…

When I told him you were working on the 4th and I’d be alone, he said ‘but you could hang out with me!’

sounds like I had a weird dream, right? no…it happened.

i vote for ‘If I were a boy’ by Beyonce. just because.

Aww! Katie! Come anyway. I mean, David Archie is totally much cooler than Amy Martin. I saw your Twitpic with him and just ::sighed::. You could still come, you know… just sayin…

  • Trish says:

If you put up a YouTube of you singing and we know what you sound like – that would help! Do something known but not too known. That’s all I’ve got. Best of luck!

Amy, maybe a Pretender’s song or two would be good for your style. I’ll Stand by You, Forever Young. I have a CD of some of their songs if you need me to send them your way!! SO COOL!!!!

I think bon jovi’s Living on a Prayer would be great! Amazing song but you can give it your own little twist
